Rug Tufting 101 - March 15th + 16th
Dates: March 15th + 16th
Time: 12pm-6pm (3/15), 12pm-4pm (3/16)
Location: Daffodill Studios 2642 NE Sandy Blvd

Experience Level: Beginner
Join us for a fun rug tufting workshop with illustrative designer, Emily Small (@emilysmallstudio)! Learn the basics of using a power tufting machine to create your own textural wall hanging or accent rug in this weekend intensive.
Students will be provided with their own workspace including a cut-pile tufting machine, wood frame, backing fabric, tools, and supplies to use during the class. Emily will guide the process from start to finish, sharing her technical approach to creating colorful rug art!
Participants will leave this 2-day workshop with a finished 24”x24” tufted rug, a handy quick-start guide, and the knowledge to continue making rugs on their own.
Yarn:We’ll provide a selection of acrylic yarn for you to use! Yarn colors and quantities are limited, so if your design requires specific shades, we recommend you bring your own!
Bringing your own yarn? Some pointers to keep in mind:
• Acrylic or wool yarn / worsted or medium weight
• No shiny, super fuzzy, or rough yarn
• Recommended brands: big twist, caron, loops & threads
Design:Frames will be pre-stretched with primary fabric and projected with your provided design. Please send it to emilysmallstudio@gmail.com or decide to free-hand draw during the class for an experimental approach!
Class Schedule:
Day 1: Learn about the tools, materials, how to operate the tufting machine. Tuft your entire rug, and apply glue!
Day 2: Attach the backing, carve with electric shears, and finish your rug! Clean up.
There is no official break time! Feel free to bring any snacks or drinks to nibble on, and break whenever you wish.
Safety + Accessibility:
Wear close-toed shoes. Tie back long hair. Age limit: 18+
Participants will be standing and holding tufting machines for extended periods of time. Machines weigh 3-4 lbs and will require arm + hand strength to operate. Please note this is a physical craft and will require you to move around!
